Multimodal Roadway Users: Concept Designs and Implementation Strategizing
Our 6-person team was tasked to develop roadway designs that improve safety for all roadway users at the National Mall in Washington D.C. This project required background research on the current roadway conditions, stakeholder meetings, requirement and constraint definition, roadway conceptual designs with alternatives, feedback and review, and final implementation strategies. I was the project manager and lead designer for this project; the timeframe for this project was 18 months.
Project Manager, Concept Designer
The team held regular meetings with the client over the entirety of the 18 months of the project. Initially, the team explored the current conditions of this national park, including the type of infrastructure that is there, the services provided, and the way in which it is used by visitors, residents, and commuters. By exploring users' needs, the team identified multiple modes of transportation that required improvements along 5 corridors in the national park.
The team held meetings with stakeholders to improve upon data collection and narrow down specific infrastructure interventions that were recommended by different stakeholders. While these meetings were held virtually, the team held interactive meetings with Google Street View and digital mark-up tools, which were used to identify locations of concern.
The team produced a draft round of conceptual designs with alternatives and received client and stakeholder feedback. The team incorporated the feedback and produced tables to help the client implement these strategies.
